Aylestone Hall Gardens

Once again the Park events are upon us, with Aylestone Hall Gardens being the first. The day started well with the sun shining. Whilst turnout was less than last year, we did have a number of renal patients visit the stand and the Tombola proved to be a hit.

Evington Fete

We attended the Evington fete for the third time this year and once again the weather was good. The turnout was very good and we had a number of visitors to the stand showing an interest in the LKPA. The tombola and childrens games were very popular and a good day was had by all.

Leicester Motor Show

After the success of last year’s event, it was decided to attend again this year. Sadly the weather forecast did not look good but we all turned up and hoped for the best.

The day started off well but then the forecast proved to be right with strong winds blowing across the racecourse. A number of stalls ended up taking their gazebo’s down and sadly we had to do the same as the wind had bent the framework. We soldiered on until it started to rain, and then admitted defeat. We were however busy on the stall up to this point.

Coach Trip

We decided to revisit Skegness as the resort has something for everyone and is only a 2 hour journey. We met at the Leicester General Hospital at 7.30 and were on our way by 8.20, arriving at Skegness at about 10.30. As with the last two years, the weather was brilliant and all the passengers were looking forward to the next 7 hours by the sea.

Thanks are sent to the British Kidney Patients Association for the grant that paid for one of the coaches. Feedback for the day was that everybody had a great day and we were even asked where are we going next year.

World Kidney Day 14th March 2013

To mark this years WKD (World Kidney Day), an information & fundraising stand was held in LGH Reception. The day was relatively quiet but with the help of the jewellery for sale, we managed to make a profit.

Nkf(National Kidney Federation) Lkpa Day 23rd March 2013

The National Kidney Federation held their annual AGM this year at The Studio in Birmingham and invited all of the Kidney patient association’s in the UK to attend. This was the 1st time that this has taken place and it was explained that the NKF feel that we should all join forces to be better prepared to achieve our aims. The event was attended by Alan Carter and Naresh Lakhani. Sadly for a number of reasons other members were unable to attend. We were made very welcome and it was good to meet and talk to the NKF and other KPA’s.

ADPKD Information Day 2013

An information day on Polycystic kidney Disease was held at Birmingham City Hospital on 16th March 2013. This was attended by the LKPA secretary and her Husband, LKPA Events coordinator. The day was split into sections, with guest speakers talking about the effects of Polycystic Kidney Disease and other issues that can also cause problems with this disease. There were also consultant surgeons discussing transplants. We were also joined from Leicester by the Leicester Exercise team who explained the benefits of exercise for renal patients. Alan commented that as a non – renal patient, the day was very informative.

Lkpa Christmas Party 2012

Christmas party – a great night was had by all! The party was a resounding success and was attended by approximately 130 people who all bought tickets and who were not disappointed. The feedback has been very positive with many asking when the next one is taking place! We would like to thank everyone who supported the event by either purchasing admission tickets or taking a chance on our raffle. Many thanks also to Carol, Manageress of the Willowbrook sports and social club who donated use of the venue free of charge. Entertainment was provided by Leicester based band Function Junction who stepped in at short notice and certainly added to the success of the event. Also to the delight of the children (and some adults) Santa dropped in on his way to Lapland and Mickey and Mini mouse also made a special appearance. Several people also very kindly donated sums of money. A massive thank you – the money raised will certainly be put to good use and will certainly make a difference. We would also like to extend our thanks to all who donated raffle prizes however large or small. They were gratefully received.

3rd July And 10th August: Olympic Events, ‘eat’ Restaurant, LGH

To celebrate the Olympics, Carla Smith brought her torch in the day after. Those attending were invited to make a donation to the LKPA for being photographed with the torch. The LKPA also launched their new range of goods bearing the LKPA logo (including cotton bags, ribbons, car stickers, trolley token key rings). The these events raised over £150. Thanks to those involved and especially Carla for generously giving up and working so hard in her lunch break.

Skegness 2012

The LKPA party of patients, family and friends met in the main car park accompanied by a number of volunteer nurses along with their families for the trip to Skegness on a slightly cool and overcast Sunday in September. We were to travel in one large and one small coach. After a few inevitable minor hiccups were sorted out, we set off as near to 8am as planned. The journey to Skegness was straight-forward and uneventful and we reached there at about 10.30, two and a half hours later. We were dropped off outside the Embassy Centre, a very central and convenient location from where we were to be picked up at the end of the afternoon. Everyone went off in their family or friendship groups, some heading for the tea rooms while others went straight off to the sandy beaches, the amusement arcades or the attractions of the gift shops.

Jubilee Celebration 2012

The LKPA was invited to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations at Markfield Community Centre. We had had an information stand and fund raising activities – in addition to providing refreshments during the day and at the evening disco! The raffle of a ‘Diamond Jubilee Cake’, generously donated by Samantha Thomas, Mehndi (traditional Indian hand painting) children’s activities and, especially the catering, raised over £280.

World Kidney Day 2012

To celebrate the many successful kidney transplants performed in Leicester, and highlight the importance for all of us to join the National Organ Donor Register, there was a balloon launch by over 200 transplant recipients, donors, people waiting for a transplant and staff from the John Walls Renal Unit and the Transplant Unit. Thanks to all of you who were able to come and support the launch – and also contribute to the nearly £600 raised on the day. Many others deserve ‘Thanks’ – the planning committee, the speakers, the backroom workers who blew up and netted (on a windy day) over 400 balloons, the band ‘JETS’ for the entertainment both outside at the balloon launch and later in the restaurant, and the many hands who set up, manned, and then dismantled the stands, NHS staff who took BPs etc. and others not specifically mentioned! This event was organised in conjunction with the UHL’s Kidney Care Appeal (KCA).

Join us now and be up to date with our events! We need volunteers to help support the patients and organise social events for our organisation.
